Break For Books

This past month, I caught the reader's bug. I really can't explain why it happened but it probably did because I was bored at work and needed something to do during the down-time. Nevertheless, It was great keeping my mind working and thinking all month long just before I have to go back to school again.
Buzzmarketing is a book about advertising in such a way people will talk about your business undoubtedly. Mark Hughes puts out what he has learned in his years of experience and simple, yet creative ideas to better build 'buzz' for your company.

The Hunger Games Trilogy. I had never heard of these books before but Mishelle got me the first book, The Hunger Games, and I ate it up (that joke was dumb I'm aware of that). It was different, violent, and follows a story that leaves you anxious for the next time you read.

I also finished up Catching Fire, book two, and Mockingjay, book three of the series. If you haven't heard anything about it or know of the series, you soon will.

Innovate! Another great Business-oriented read but also has great insights into Great Businesses formed in some of the most difficult economic recessions in history. It's astonishing to see in the first few chapters just how many have survived to be powerhouse businesses today.

The Tipping Point. There's just no way around it, Malcolm Gladwell is amazing. His study of how little things can make a world of difference so drastically and so quickly is thorough, intelligent, and entertaining.

Fahrenheit 451. I'm sure you've already read this but wow, what a great take on a different form of society. 'The family' and a job as a firman, paid to start fires gives the book a creepy feel. What is interesting as well is in his afterword of the book, Ray Bradbury mentions he wrote this as a 'dime novel' in the basement of UCLA paying 10 cents per half-hour on a typewriter and didn't think it would later become a classic.

Anyway, the books were awesome. I recommend each one. Thanks Mishelle for the spark.

  1. Jake,
I'm impressed. I cannot explain to you how happy I am that you married a prodigious reader and that she is influencing your own reading!
I loved seeing what you have read lately. You'll have to tell us what book was your favorite.
I just ordered a new stack of books from the library and am waiting for them to arrive. I'm in between books right now which always makes me restless. I can hardly wait for them to get here.
Well, your summer reading list reminded me of when we threw out the TV and you read 10 books in a week.
Please if you get a chance, go to the library and check out the Diary of A Wimpy Kid series. You will love the yellow book. The kids said the mother reminds them of me since she's always trying to get her son to read and forming book clubs for him.
And on a serious note try the book, Freakonomics. That's another one I love.
And please remember The Leslie Montano rule: Never go to bed without reading. It's the best way to fall asleep!

  2. P.S. I have never read any of Ray Bradbury's fiction. Big surprise but I love Dandelion Wine. It's about his boyhood and I think you would love it. He lived next door to his grandparents and it's all about his family, his brother and his summers and life.
I think you would love it.

  3. Oscar, your mom may love Dandelion Wine, but I prefer a Chablais preferably from the Swiss canton of Vaud just north of the canton of Valis. Its about a boy who grew up next to his grandpa who drank "cough medicine" every night. You would love it.

I have seen almost every book you have listed and am so proud of you for buying them for Shell.

I hope you guys are doing well and hope you have a great Labor Day weekend.

    Stay Nerdy,

    Corleone
