Hunting Dogs

We are playing with the idea of operating our own Kennel as a side business in the future. Obviously, I LOVE this idea. I grew up with dogs my entire life and I love them soooooo much. My Father is a hunter and has always had some great waterfowl and upland game dogs, we would want to specialize in Bird/Gun Dogs. German Shorthairs or Deutsch Drahthaars. The Drahthaars are a more specialty breed (which in dog terms means expensive) so, we would start with shorthairs and work our way up to the Drahthaars. We know it's a lot of work but we think it would be a really good business/activity for our family to do together, we would breed them and train them for bird hunting. If this was to take off, I would have to wave goodbye to Law and focus on our Kennel (which wouldn't be too bad at all). At the bottom of this post is a picture of me and my dog back home, she is our bird hunting dog, a german shorthair named, Felda. Below that picture is a pic of a very cute Drahthaar. Drahthaar are really cool, they can hunt ANYTHING, waterfowl, upland, wild boar, deer, elk, you name it!

If anyone is curious as to what a kennel actually is. Here is a short summary.
A kennel is basically where an owner breeds purebred dogs of a particular breed. The dogs have to meet specifications in order to be considered pedigreed. These types of dogs are worth a lot of money. They dogs are registered through the AKC (American Kennel Club). In some cases the kennel will train dogs for a particular skill. Skills include, police work, service work, hunting jobs, etc.

To see a website of an actual kennel check out http://www.vomwasatch.com
The website above is for Deutsch Drahtaars, this is an EXCELLENT kennel in my opinion.

This is the type of kennel we would like to run. They are very successful businesses. They include several mature dogs (which are not for sale) that breed 1-2 times a year, each giving a litter of anywhere from 6-13 pups. Pups, depending on the breed and blood lines can go anywhere from $600 to $1500 dollars. It would be a great family business and a great thing for our kids to grow up around.
There are a lot of bad kennels though that don't treat the animals that well. We would love our dogs very much, afterall - they are apart of our family. .

Anways, I really hope this works out in the future. It would be a dream come true.
I know to everyone out there we must just seem wide-eyed and dreamy, but hey it could happen. After all, what's to stop us?

  1. Mishelle,
Is graduation over? Did you survive? Are you really done?
I hope it went well. Congrats!
I liked reading about your dog plans...I don't know much about dogs, so it was extra interesting.
My dad, Jake's gramps, LOVED his dogs and we never went for very long without a dog. We are hoping to get a corgi soon for the kids. You will have to give us some training tips. :)
We hope you are both well! Take Care!

  2. P.S. Could you please ask Jacob about when we took our naughty dogs to dog school together?? It was horribly embarassing (and funny).
